Card Trick In A Glass

This card trick produces a powerful visual effect which will amaze your audience. And since it uses a wine glass as a prop it's an excellent trick to perform at a dinner party, wedding or other celebration.

The effect of the trick is magnified as the cards remain in the glass throughout the entire routine, so there's no way that you could possibly do anything underhand.

The Card Trick

You start the illusion by taking a long stemmed wine glass and telling the spectators that you're going to perform a card trick. Then announce that to prevent any cheating, you're going to do the trick while the cards are securely held in the glass.

So holding the glass in the air you place the deck of cards in the glass with the bottom card facing out to the audience.

Then you tell the spectators that you're going to locate all four aces with the help of special "search cards".

You reach into the glass and pull out a red search card (for the purposes of this example, we'll assume it's the three of hearts). And you place it in front of the rest of the cards in the glass so the audience can see it.

Next, you announce that this red search card will help to find the first red ace. Holding the glass by the stem, you quickly pass your napkin over the glass and by magic the red search card (three of hearts) has been replaced by a red ace.

So you remove the red ace and place it at the back of the deck. Another quick pass by the napkin and this time the red search card is replaced by the other red ace.

Now it's time to really impress the audience. Placing a black search card (for the purposes of this example, we'll assume it's the nine of clubs) in front of the deck, tell them that you will now find the two black aces. Pass the napkin over the glass and a black ace appears. Another pass of the napkin and the final black ace appears.

Remove the deck, put it in your pocket and enjoy the applause. After all, the cards were held in the glass all the time. So there's no way that you could have use any sleight of hand.

The Preparation

As you would imagine, a trick that looks this good requires a certain amount of preparation before the performance.

You need one large long stemmed wine glass that is big enough to contain a pack of regular sized playing cards. Make sure that the glass is clear so that the audience can see the cards inside the glass.

Next, you need to find a cloth napkin that is large enough to completely cover the glass and thick enough to prevent people seing through it.

And finally, you need two packs of playing cards with an identical design on the backs of the cards.

Take the ace of hearts and the ace of diamonds (the two red aces) from one of the decks of cards and glue them together back to back. Take your time and make sure that they look like one card one they are glued together.

Next, do the same with the two black aces (the ace of spades and the ace of clubs) from the same pack of cards.

Once you've selected the two search cards that you plan to use for the trick (we'll use the nine of clubs (black search card) and the three of hearts (red search card)), find these cards from the desk. Now find the same two cards from the other deck and glue them back to back. You won't need the second pack of cards any more.

At this stage you should have a pack of cards that consists of 46 cards, the black search card (a nine of clubs), the red search card (a three of hearts), a red/black search card (a nine of clubs/three of hearts), the red aces card (a ace of hearts/ace of diamonds) and the black aces card (ace of clubs/ace of spades).

The Secret

Before you begin the trick, make sure that you arrange the deck of cards as follows;
  • Take the pack of 46 cards and place it face down

  • Next, place the black search card (a nine of clubs) face up

  • Then the black aces card

  • Then the red/black search card (a nine of clubs/three of hearts) with the red three face up

  • Then the red aces card. And finally, the red search card (a three of hearts) face down
Now you're ready to begin the preformance. Place the deck in the glass with the bottom card facing the audience. At this point it's important to bear in mind that when you select a wine glass to use, make sure that it will hold the cards together as a pack. If not, there's a danger that the audience could see that the cards are pre-arranged.

The first step involved taking the red search card which is nearest to you and placing it on the bottom of the deck for the audience to see. You should now be looking at the red ace card.

Holding the glass by the stem, pass the napkin over the glass and as you do, use your finger to twist the stem of the glass 180 degrees so that the red ace is facing the audience.

Keep your fingers rigid, make sure the stem of the glass is positioned in the bend at the first joint of your fingers and use your thumb to do the rotation. This will allow you to achieve the twist discreetly without appearing to move your fingers.

Now take the red aces card and put it on the top of the deck towards you. Put in back in the glass in such a way that you're left facing the other side of the red aces card. Do another napkin pass and twist and the audience will see the other red ace has been found.

Now say that you need a black search card to help you find the black aces. So take the red/black search card (a nine of clubs/three of hearts) which is facing you lift is out an move it to the bottom of the deck so that the audience can see the black search card (the nine of clubs side of the card). You should now have the black aces card facing you.

Another quick napkin twist and the audience will see the first black ace. Then take the black aces card from the bottom of the pack, place it at your side of the pack (making sure that the other ace is facing you) and perform one more napkin twist to reveal the forth and final card.
