The Essential Rules Of Street Magic

Street magic has attracted massive exposure over the past few years. But it's not as easy as it looks. So if you want to start performing magic tricks for people in clubs, bars and out on the street, here are the most important things to bear in mind.

1) The Right Look

Many magicians say that if you want to be taken seriously as a magician, it's vital to dress smartly. While that may be true for stage magicians, street magic is all about appearing casual and impromptu. Jeans and T-shirt are the perfect combination for performing street magic.

The more you look like a normal person the less people will expect from you and the more amazed they'll be by your magic.

It's also important to act casually when you interact with your spectators. Make everything you do seem easy and nonchalent. If your crowd think that you're not even trying, they'll be amazed when you start pulling off red hot illusions.

2) The Right Audience

A key aspect of street magic is finding the right people to watch your magic. It doesn't matter how good you are, you'll encounter a lot of people who have absolutely no interest in what you've got to offer.

But there a a few simple steps that you can take to minimize the amount of rejection that you experience.

Number one, learn to read people. This will help you to make an educated guess at who will appreciate your magic. For example, never approach people who are walking quickly with an obvious destination in mind. These people are unlikely to thank you for delaying them. Likewise, don't bother with people who are deep in conversation with their friends. And finally, avoid groups of people who tend to shun magic. This includes older people and groups of men, who seem to take a delight in trying to ruin your magic.

Number two, if someone doesn't want to see your magic respect their wishes. Just move on until you find someone who wants to see a magic trick. A hostile crowd won't do much for your confidence or your ability to entertain.

3) The Right Performance

Now this may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but it's absolutely vital that you know your tricks inside out. Practice them until you can do them smoothly and without mistakes in any situation. Let's face it, losing your way in the middle of an unfamiliar trick won't do much for your confidence.

And before you go out on the street, make sure that you have a good idea what routines you want to perform. Select your tricks so that they flow smoothly from one to the next. And as always, keep your best trick for last, otherwise the rest of your routine will seem rather flat.

As I said, it's not easy to perform stunning street magic that will draw crowds of awe-struck spectators. But if you bear these things in mind and keep practicing your routine, everything will fall into place. And once you get it right, street magic is one of the most rewarding forms of magic.
