Rubber Band Tricks
This simple rubber band trick is called the hopping rubber band. It's also known as the Houdini escape. You'll see why in a moment.
The purpose of this piece of magic is to show that you can demonstrate the impossible - by getting solid to pass through solid.
And all you need for this minor miracle is two medium sized elastic bands.
Start by holding the back of your left hand up to your spectators. Kepp all your fingers straight and together. Now take the rubber band and loop it over the two fingers next to the thumb on your left hand. And before the eyes of your audience, the band jumps to your pinkie and the finger next to it.
How can you explain that? Easy!
After you place the rubber band over your first two fingers, bring the rubber band right down to the base of these two fingers. Keep the back of your hand facing your spectators and pull the elastic band towards you to show that the band is solid. As you do this, curl all your fingers (not including your thumb) towards you and make sure that all four of your fingers touch the palm of your hand inside the elastic band that you pulled towards you.
At this point is still appears to your audience as though the band is around the original two fingers. Wait for a moment and then straighten all four of your fingers. The band will appear to jump from the first two fingers to your ring and pinkie fingers.
Magic!
And you can repeat this from side to side as often as you want. Just repeat the same moves again.
Not bad, but it's not exactly sawing a woman in half, is it!
So let's make the trick look more impressive.
Once you've shown your audience the hopping trick back and forth a number of times, make sure you end with the band around the two fingers that you started with. Keep the band where it is and introduce the other medium sized elastic band.
Take the second band and twist it over the end of your four fingers in an extended figure of eight pattern. Loop it round your index finger, then twist the band and put it over the next finger, twist, over the third finger, twist and finally loop it over your pinkie.
Show your audience that the original band is still solid and now trapped over your first two fingers. So it couldn't possibly jump across to your other fingers, could it?
Well, yes! Just repeat the same process for moving the band from your first two fingers to the next fingers. Back of hand towards audience, show band is solid, curl fingers towards you, straighten fingers.
As if by magic, the band will still jump over the blockage and loop over your other two fingers. The audience will think that the first band has managed to penetrate and cross through the second band.
As always, before you take this trick to your public, make sure that you perfect this trick until you can perform it confidently and smoothly every time.
